How many points can I have on my NY driver's license?

State of New York rules provide for moving violation convictions to be tracked through a driver point system. If you hit 11 points, your license will be suspended. These points are tallied as of the date of conviction, and remain for 18 months. Once you have eleven points, you are likely to lose your right to drive until they drop down again.

In addition, there’s definitely going to be a driver responsibility assessment that needs to be paid. This is an extra DMV fee tacked on every year for three years, as a reminder that your driving history isn’t the best, as if the higher insurance premiums you’ll be facing isn’t reminder enough.

These are serious penalties, and I had someone call me after pleading guilty and finding all of this out after the fact. In most cases, there’s no taking back a guilty plea, which is why the time to talk to an experienced Hudson Valley traffic attorney is before you do anything else.

You can upload a traffic ticket here to get a free consultation. It’s always better to understand your options before it’s too late.
