When your license is suspended in New York

It’s never a good feeling finding out that your driving license or privileges have been suspended in New York, and it’s even more awkward if a police officer breaks that news to you. In many cases, license suspensions are the result of failing to respond to a ticket. Licenses are no longer being suspended for failure to pay a fine, but as a bankruptcy attorney I have to say that dealing with debt collectors can be as much of a headache as having a suspended license.

Once you suspect that your license has been suspended, the first thing you should do is call Selby Legal. If you know what court has an unasnwered ticket for you, then hiring an upstate traffic attorney will take the heat off. You’ll still have to pay a suspension lift fee ($70 when this post was written) either right away or when your case is resolved, depending on how nice you’ve been to the court personnel.

If you don’t remember getting a ticket, or you’re fuzzy about where, or if you think there are more than one open tickets, then we’ll ask you to get a copy of your driving history for review. We’ve worked with clients to resolve zombie tickets in multiple courts.

There are other reasons for a license being suspended, and some of these aren’t going away just because you hire an attorney. If you’ve been convicted of speeding three times inside of 18 months, or you’re guilty of vehicular homicide or trying to overthrow the government, for example, then we may not be able to get that suspension lifted as easily.

Unless you’re absolutely sure that your license is suspended due to treason, though, it’s probably worthwhile to get a free consultation about your issue.
